The first candidates have been approved for the upcoming Best Sommelier of Europe & Africa contest. “The Technical Committee needs to double check every candidature” to ensure compliance with the contest bylaws, says Michèle Chantôme, Coordinator of the SCC. These include citizenship in the country he/she is representing and membership in the national sommelier organization, among other stipulations.
Candidates from the following countries have already been successfully vetted for 17 countries:
Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Mauritius, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland
This list is by no means complete, however. Any candidates who have already been selected by their national association are strongly encouraged to register now and before the new final registration deadline for the contest on 10 December. With the contest being postponed to March 2021, any associations who have been unable to select their representatives still have more than three months left to do so. “Whether you apply now or later, we look forward to greeting you at the contest, for which we expect to welcome sommeliers from 41 countries around Europe and Africa supported by their national presidents,” Chantôme emphasizes.
