Competition and Meetings Calendar Comes into Focus

29 Oct 2019

The General Assembly reviewed and voted on sites around the world as potential hosts for a slate of upcoming competitions and meetings.

While the date and site of the next General Assembly are already set (Ningxia, China in 2020), several candidates for subsequent meetings were reviewed and approved. Mainz, Germany was awarded the 2021 GA. It will be scheduled to coincide with that city’s famous Weinbörse event in late April.

Finland (2022) and Spain (2023) were presented as candidates for the years thereafter.

On the competition side, Chile was tapped to host the “Best Sommelier of the Americas” competition in 2021. The contest was most recently held in Montreal in 2018.

Finally, pitch presentations were held by candidates to host the Best Sommelier of the World 2022. The four contenders — France, Georgia, Latvia and New Zealand — were each given 6 minutes to present their case. No decision was made at the General Assembly, however. Voting will be conducted online later this year.
