The Best USA Sommelier Association (BUSA)
The Best USA Sommelier Association (BUSA) was formed to create a community of sommeliers with the shared vision of fostering excellence, as well as embracing diversity, and inclusivity within the sommelier profession. Open to both current and former sommeliers, BUSA operates under a robust code of conduct and democratic governance structure, with a Board of Directors elected by members for three-year terms and officers appointed annually. Membership is capped at 100, prioritizing active and competing sommeliers, with a vision to evolve toward a merit-based system while championing inclusivity and diversity.
BUSA
BUSA is dedicated to advancing the profession through competitions to advance candidates to represent the USA at prestigious regional and global contests. Beyond professional growth, BUSA actively addresses systemic inequities. The association recognizes the marginalization of people of color and other underrepresented groups in hospitality and takes a proactive stance to amplify their contributions and voices. Its leadership reflects a commitment to diversity across racial, ethnic, gender, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized identities.
Ensuring a safe, harassment-free environment is a cornerstone of BUSA’s ethos. The association enforces a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination and sexual harassment, with clear channels for addressing grievances confidentially and respectfully. Additionally, strict ethical standards prevent conflicts of interest in competitions and examinations, safeguarding the integrity of its programs.
Supported by membership dues and industry sponsorships, BUSA continues to elevate the sommelier community by championing professionalism, equity, and respect, creating a more inclusive and dynamic future for hospitality professionals.
BUSA is thrilled to host the ASI Contest Best Sommelier of the Americas 2025 and welcome candidates from across the Americas, ASI board members, committee members and visiting dignitaries to Sonoma.

About sonoma county
“There is no country on the face of the earth which possesses so many natural facilities for grape culture and winemaking as the State of California.” – Ágoston Haraszthy
Ágoston Haraszthy, the ‘father of the California wine industry,’ had a utopian vision of California as the new Oenotria. This vision was undoubtedly inspired by his deep love and admiration for his Buena Vista estate and the surrounding lands of Sonoma. According to Haraszthy, “It will take time to convince the public of the possibilities that this land holds for the cultivation of wine grapes, but I am certain it will one day rival the great wine regions of the world.” His belief that California could produce wines to not only equal but at times surpass those of Europe took longer to materialize than he might have imagined. However, today, Sonoma stands proudly among the world’s finest wine-producing regions.
Sonoma is not only capable of producing world-class wines but is also unmatched in California for its ability to produce such a diverse range of high-quality wine styles. Indeed, Sonoma represents the full spectrum of California’s best. It is a place where the warm inland regions benefit from the nurturing Californian sun, while its coastal vineyards thrive in the cool breezes blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. This incredible diversity of terroir enables Sonoma’s vintners, across its 19 recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), to craft a remarkable variety of wines. These include crisp and lively traditional-method sparkling wines, fresh and savory Pinot Noir, edgy and vibrant Chardonnay, and ripe, full-bodied red wines from varietals such asCabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel.
Today, Sonoma County is home to nearly 500 wineries, most of which are not only dedicated to fine wine production but also committed to sustainable viticulture. Impressively, 99 percent of Sonoma County’s vineyards are certified sustainable, highlighting the region’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its role as a leader in responsible winemaking.
Beyond its exceptional wines, Sonoma is a region steeped in beauty and tradition. Its rolling vineyards, framed by majestic redwoods and coastal vistas, create an unparalleled sense of place. Visitors are drawn to its vibrant winemaking culture, but they stay for its authenticity, where small-scale family wineries thrive alongside larger estates, maintaining a balance between innovation and heritage. With its diversity of styles and deep commitment to sustainability, Sonoma is not only a jewel of California wine country but also a beacon for the global wine industry. Haraszthy’s dream has come to fruition in a way that exceeds even his ambitious expectations, positioning Sonoma as a true rival to the great wine regions of the world.
