Best Sommelier of the World
Every 3 years, ASI holds the Best Sommelier of the World contest. After the contest in Antwerp, Belgium in 2019, the next edition will take place in Paris from 7th to 12th February 2023. 34 years after the last contest held in France!
About Best Sommelier of the World
68 candidates coming from 65 countries : 65 association members of ASI (5 of them being « observer members), add on top 3 winners of continental contests, as « ASI Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa 2021», « ASI Best Sommelier of the Americas 2022», and « ASI Best Sommelier of Asia & Pacific 2022». You now have our list of champions, ready to take one of the highest challenge in their career !
The candidates will meet during 4 days of high-level tests, tasting, service tasks – all aimed at putting them in professional situations to test their skills and abilities.
Thanks to the ASI Best Sommelier of the World contest, the whole world of hospitality will be in the spotlight. This contributes to better knowledge of sommellerie and the hospitality industry.
Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime event. The ASI Best Sommelier of the World 2023 will be an historic event, as it is the first time in three decades the cradle of sommellerie, France, will host this contest.
Retrospective
The contest was created in 1969 along with the creation of ASI overall.
Only one time in the contest history it was held in France- in 1989 when the local candidate Serge Dubs won the title.
The reigning Best Sommelier of the World is Marc Almert – 2019, holding this title since 2019 contest in Antwerp, Belgium.
The last-to-date French Best Sommelier of the World is Olivier Poussier, who won his title in 2000 in Montréal, Canada.

Candidates
Nearly 70 candidates will represent 61 national member associations and 5 observer associations of ASI, along with 3 winners of continental contests, as Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa, Best Sommelier of the Americas, and Best Sommelier of Asia & Pacific.
The jury at ASI contests is formed from the members of the ASI Sommelier Contest Committee. The members of this committee represent people that have demonstrated superior skills and knowledge in the past, many of whom have won or been on the podium of an ASI Best Sommelier of the World contest.
